"Here."
Serenity handed the physics teacher her transfer slip, nodding and smiling at all the appropriate times as he greeted her and welcomed her to the school. The classroom was empty, thankfully, so she was spared the embarrassment of having to have several dozen sets of eyes pick her apart while another teacher spoke to her in front of them. When he was finished looking over her transcript form, he pointed her towards the lab desks, telling her that there was no seating arrangement and to choose a spot where ever was comfortable. She thanked him, hung up her coat, and walked briskly to the back of the class.
Physics. What a pointless subject for her to study. What was the point of learning the "laws" of physics when you could just bend them with telekinesis anyway? Still, she wasn't about to point that out to the teachers. Serenity had enrolled as a junior, and was having a hard enough time fitting in as it was. She didn't need to start contradicting the laws humans regarded as the word of the gods and expose their flaws. She sat with a sigh, aimlessly flipping through the battered textbook she'd been given while waiting for class to begin.
As she turned a page, Serenity noticed several white flakes stuck to the sleeve of her blue sweater. Quickly checking herself over, she saw that none of the snow that clung to her tight black pants, hair, or shoulders where her sweater draped off of them had melted either. She brushed it off hurriedly, knowing that it wouldn't melt as it was supposed to like it would on her new classmates, and would surely attract unwanted attention to her. She'd just finished running her manicured fingers through her long bronze hair when the first students began filing in through the doorway.

Ashen arrived behind everyone else to class, what a suprise. His eyes scanned the seats to see a spare seat next to a girl he hadnt seen before. He headed over and sat down offering the girl a friendly smile as he sat down 'Hi there...' He took out his book and looked to the board at the front. Physics wasnt his favourite subject but he pt up with it. It was nice feeling normal again, well as normal as he could feel given his past. He looked to the girl 'I'm Ashen... Is it your first day?' His smile was timid and shy, just like his voice. Ashen wasnt used to talking to people all that much.
He pulled out his pen and opened his notebook to a free page ready for class to start. The noise in the classroom was rising and the teacher was starting to get annoyed by it. He was looking forward to the class being over already, His eyes rested back on the girl next to him. Saying she was stunning was an understatement... She was one of the most beautiful girls he had ever seen. Just like that Cullen girl... what was her name? Rosalie... He suddenly realised he was staring and blushed a deep red turning his attention to his book in which he started writing what the teacher was putting on the board.
Ashen had slowly been settling into the school himself, it was a slow process but he was starting to get more relaxed now. He hoped that all the drama wasnt going to affect his school work, he just wanted things to settle down with his dad, he just wished he understood Ashen needed this break.

When the human boy sat next to her, Serenity stopped breathing momentarily to make sure that her thirst didn't get the better of her. She knew that she should have fed the night before, though she couldn't find any big game animals that she could draw blood from without fatally hurting them, and she hadn't had the heart to take the life of a smaller animal. It was a hunger, she reminded herself, and just like mortal hunger, this one would have to be ignored and controlled until she could satiate it.
It took her a moment to realize the boy, Ashen, had spoken to her. Slightly taken aback, she looked at him in surprise. He was definitely human, whole human she could tell, without any wolf - so that ruled out any hidden agendas he had in talking to her. In all of the other places she'd lived, everyone had left her alone unless she'd wanted company. Certainly no one else out right spoke to her within seconds of seeing her. She opened her mouth to reply with the teacher began class, and she obediently turned towards the front of the class, pretending to pay attention.
Flipping open a notebook, she turned to a clean page and scrawled in seventeenth century script a message back to him. "Hello. My name is Serenity. Yes, it's my first day. I moved here a few weeks ago from Canada. It seems as though I will have a lot of catching up to do in class...you're already half way through the textbook chapters. Did you just start this section on centrifugal force, or are you close to the end? I cannot really tell just yet.
Sorry if this is distracting you from the lecture."

Ashen peeked around the class and noticed a lot of people staring at the new girl and whispering. It was strange to know it wasnt him they were whispering about, he had gotten so used to it that he had to remind himself people here didnt know his past. He looked over as she started writing... Wow that was some handwriting she had! It reminded him of those old fonts you got on word programs. He read it slowly and opened a new fresh page of his own notebook.
'I have only just moved here myself, what brought you to rainy Forks? We've only just started the chapter, if you need any help just let me know. Dont worry, the distraction is welcome, I have already done this chapter before in my last school.'
He was forcing himself to not stare at the poor girl, there was some so stunning, yet so alien about her. At least she seemed more sociable than the Cullen kids were. There were so many similarities between the way they looked. He forced himself to stare at the board, not really taking in what the teacher was saying, not that he really needed to know anyway.
He had recieved another angry phonecall from his dad that morning, he was seriously thinking of changing his number and only letting his sister know it. Though he knew his dad would still manage to get hold of it somehow. He missed his sister, but he could do without all the family drama that was his old life. Here in Forks it was quiet and he was finding it very welcoming, even if the people werent used to new comers...

Serenity's eyes zipped over Ashen's note. She smiled slightly to herself - he was new, too. Her lips still curved in a smile, she glanced at him quickly and picked up her pen.
"I'm emancipated, and I move around a lot. I was enrolled in a Canadian school for a while, but I decided I wanted to come back to the states. I'm not too fond of the East coast...so I guess I just kept away from it as much as I could.
And thank you for offering to help. We started this chapter in my old school too, so I think I know where this class is. Things are just a little bit different en francais than here, so it's tricky to switch languages without missing anything."[/font][/i]
She'd neglected to explain why it was she disliked the East coast - more explicitly Massachussetts - so much, but she didn't really feel that she needed to go into details about her old life. It's not like her parents getting burned in the Salem Witch Trials and her narrow escape of the stake was a pleasant conversation starter, nor was what met her in the woods that night when she'd thought she was safe.
Serenity had been absentmindedly doodling Celtic runes on her notebook while drowning out the teachers' words. She was aware, after a moment, of Ashen glancing at her strangely, and looking rather anxious.
"Is something wrong? You seem upset by me...did my hair get all messed up from the snow?"

Ashen read her new note and smiled, his eyes quickly darted to the teacher who was starting the lesson by reading out of the textbook. Ashen looked back to his paper and startde to write as if taking notes, but instead wrote a reply to her message.
'You like the rain much then? Its very different here to where I grew up, I'm not used to the cold. It seems nice enough here though, but it seems that the people here arent used to new people in town, I've had a few odd looks since arriving here.
You speak French? Wow, I cant imagine being able to speak more than one. Useful though!'
He was finding taking his eyes off her difficult, there was something about her eyes that were just so... interesting, like he could get lost in them. He looked down to her next note and blushed a deep red shaking his head quickly and fixing his gaze on his book. Oh geez why did he have to make such an idiot of himself infront of a gorgeous girl like her?

Serenity had been fast enough to read Ashen's note as he wrote it instead of waiting until he'd finished. She had been slightly hopeful that someone in this alien place would see her as an equal, and was even more excited when Ashen hinted that he'd recently moved here, too, and empathized with her to some degree.
Ashen's hand stopped writing as he finished reading her note, and she smelled the blood rise to his face before she saw it. She was about to recoil and thought rapidly for a way to cover it, though it was not necessary. Ashen had already turned away. Serenity's mind swam as she fought the intoxicating scent, and she stopped breathing momentarily to let her head clear. So much for having a friend around here... she thought, Then again, vampires can't have friends anyways, I guess.
Serenity spent the rest of the period forcing herself to pay attention to the teacher and forget what she had so hoped would be one bright spot in this new chapter of her so far eternally dismal life. When the bell rang, Serenity stood and gathered her things, not rushing so as to offend Ashen, though also not looking him in the eye. She kept her attention solemnly on her notebook and her delicate book bag, and headed out of the classroom, smiling at the teacher and forcing herself not to sprint off campus.
She walked through the halls, navigating her way through the corridors towards the doors. Why am I even here, anyway? She thought, I've been through this a hundred times. I know everything these high schools will teach me. I make a good living at my studio. There's no sense in being here, Serenity wrapped her unneeded scarf around her neck and buttoned up her coat as a snow flurry flew into her through the open door, scattering flakes in her hair and eyelashes. Especially when I'm never welcome...

Ashen couldnt help but feel he had offended her in some way. Great now he looked like a right idiot. He wasnt very good at the social thing, he never had any real friends to be social with. He thought he could get by but it looked like he was wrong. He concentrated on the class, though he didnt take anything in at all. He started to wonder if moving away was really going to change things for him. He missed his family, but he didnt miss the drama. Then again he was struggling to survive awa from the life that he already knew. Why did he have to be born into such a dramatic life?
As the class came to an end he packed his things and watched the new girl ignore him. He sighed, the first person he had actually thought he might make a friend of and he messed it up. He grabbed his bag and ran after her 'Hey Serenity... Wait... Please...' He burst through the door out into the snow and the cold hit him like a wall of ice. He gasped and shivered, his coa was tucked into his bag, he wasnt really expecting to walk out into the snow after someone. He really missed the LA heat right now. He felt like a Lion that had been dumped in the arctic.
He shivered as he called out to her 'Look... I'm sorry, didnt mean to upset you... Its just that I...' He shivered, his lip trembling standing in the snow. He was what exactly? An idiot who cant talk to anyone especially girls that looked like they should be some sort of goddess? He sighed and turned around to head back in, great going Ashen the worlds laughing at you... again. He rubbed his hands together as he headed back to the 'warmth' of the building.

Serenity stopped dead in her tracks when she heard Ashen calling her name from behind her. She was surprised - partly stunned and partly pleasantly so. He'd followed her, so perhaps he didn't have as much of an aversion to her as she'd originally thought. Serenity turned around in time to hear him speak, or at least to try to. As he gave up on explaining and headed back into the building, he looked so...defeated. He'd followed her out into the bitter cold, tried to explain himself unnecessarily, and seemed to have had decided to leave it alone rather than make things worse. In her opinion, this was proof that he wasn't simply trying to be polite.
If this isn't just out of courtesty, then why did he follow me?
Ashen was shivering. The winters here weren't nearly as rough as the ones in Canada, but if he had just moved here from someplace warmer, he definitely wouldn't like the cold. She strode over the frozen earth to catch up to him, falling in step with him. "Ashen," She said with a heavy French accent, speaking to him for the first time. She was surprised to find her voice tinted slightly with nerves, not as melodic as it usually was. "It is...fine. Don't worry about that. It happens quite often, actually." She gave him a small smile to try to reassure him. He'd spoken to her more sincerely than any other human had in the past three centuries.
"Come, let us go to your...casier, for your books and things." She struggled to remember the English word for "locker," having spoken French for the entirety of her undead life. "I will drive you home, si tu voudrais, as payment for your help in les physiques in le futur." Her smile became wider as she looked apologetically at him. "I am sorry, I an not used to speaking in English. Writing, yes, that is fine. But I have not spoken in English in..." in three hundred years. "...well, since I was very young."

Ashen felt like a total idiot standing in the snow, shiving, looking stupid. He was expecting her to keep walking, he was used to it. So he was shocked when he heard her call his name. He paused at the door looking round to her, his lip trembling in the cold. Damn he really DID miss the LA weather, he wondered how it was the bitter cold didnt seem to effect Serenity in any way. He listened to her voice... It matched her beauty, so soft, beautiful and welcoming. He blushed slightly as she said it happened often, he bet she got loads of attention from boys. Ashen never really hung out with any girls, or guys for that matter, they all used to whisper behind his back about his family and his brother...
'It shouldnt have to happen... Its just... I'm not used to talking to people...' He let out a sigh and watched as it misted in the cold air. He tried to understand what she was saying and he smiled as she apologised 'No need to apologise...' He pushed open the door letting her head in first. He wish he could spaek another language but he couldnt, there were loads of things he couldnt do, or didnt have the confidence to do. 'Thanks for the offer of the lift... Its horrible weather out there and it would be a nightmare to walk home in this.' That and the company was most welcome.
He headed with her to the lockers, he had a few books to pick up. He felt his phone vibrate but he ignored it. He really needed to change his number, it was probably the best thing he could do... Finally change everything in his life, even if it meant hurting what little of his family he had left. 'It must be odd having to change your language... I dont think I would be able to cope.' This girl was certainly braver than he was that was for sure.

Serenity gave a small laugh. Ashen seemed so familiar in some ways; just by the way he carried himself she could tell he'd been through a lot in his life. She knew because she was the same way. She herself carried everything she needed in her small but rather expensive Coach book bag, still having nothing from classes other than the physics text book she carried in one arm. "Is there not any other student here who speaks in a different language?" She asked, leaning against the locker next to Ashen's. "But no, it is not tres difficile. I remember English from when I was younger. I can understand well. I can read or hear it and understand, but to speak...that is the more difficult now."
She realized she'd been watching him, though why she didn't know, and quickly looked away. "Oh, Ashen, was that not your phone?" she said. Serenity had heard it go off, but hadn't realized that it was the vibration she'd heard. So wrapped up in Ashen was she that she didn't pause to think that humans couldn't hear vibrations sent by cell phones, so she shouldn't have commented on it.
Serenity flicked a lock of bronze hair over her shoulder, a few unmelted flakes scattering around her. "And you will have to tell me where is it I drive to for to get to your house. I am afraid I still do not know my way around la ville other than from my home to this school. Other than that, I have not gone anywhere. I live alone, so since I have arrivee here two weeks ago I have stayed at my home. As you say, the weather here, it is...tres horrible."

Ashen knew he probably babbling and making himself look more stupid infont of Serenity. He was suprised she was still there to be honest. She was what Ashen imagined every boys perfect girl, beautiful and intelligent. In the back of his mind he wondered why she was still there talking to him 'Umm, possibly, I dont really talk to many people here...' His face reddened, he didnt like admitting he didnt really know anyone, unfortuantly is was the truth. Part of him was scared someone would recognise him and then him having moved away from his family would be pointless. He smiled shyly to Serenity 'It'll get better with time... At least I imagine it will' He didnt know, but he imagined a language was like riding a bike, you never truely forgot it.
He had noticed she had been watching him and it made his face flush red. He didnt know what she was looking at, perhaps she was working out who he was, he hoped not though. He was shocked when she asked if it was his phone going off... He didnt think the vibration was that loud... 'Yeah, its nothing important though... Just someone who cant get the hint, ya know?' He wished his dad would just leave him alone, that was wishful thinking though. He knew his dad would kick up a fuss until he gave in and moved back to LA, but he wasnt going to let that happen.
'Oh I dont live far, its up near the centre of town' He sighed slightly, great now Serenity was going to see his poor excuse for a home. He had to smile at her comment about the weather 'Yeah its not great here...' He pulled out his jacket from his bag and slipped it on, if he was going out there again he was going to be prepared this time...

Serenity laughed melodically as she watched Ashen turn different shades of red. He's cute, she thought, And very sweet. It wasn't often that she met a boy -human, especially- that she didn't want to kill on the spot. Normally she couldn't stand their arrogance and the thought apparently coded into their DNA that they ruled women. Human boys were much worse. They didn't live long enough to realize their mistakes and atone for them. Ashen was different. He was probably the only human she'd ever met that she didn't want to turn into a vampire so that he could learn and change and become a better person. From what she could see, he was a wonderful person and at a very young age. He will live a happy life, She saw the pained expression on his face when she mentioned the caller, All of this will become nothing but a memory before long.
"On y va!" she said with a smile. "Come on." She shifted the book she imagined would be heavy for humans into her right arm, sliding her left through Ashen's right and walking arm in arm down the hallway. She knew that with both of their jackets, her sweater, and both of her hands holding the book on the opposite side of her body, there was no chance of him touching her bare skin. "And you should not feel bad about not knowing many people. I told you that I move a let, yes? I do not usually make many friends in les places diferents. People at this age, they tend to be more trouble than they are worth."
They moved outside into the blustery snow, her hair being tossed gently in the wind and catching the snow in its waves. She looked at Ashen to make sure he wasn't cold, and in that one look, she realized that she could very quickly get attached to him. And that simply couldn't happen. There would come the day that, like in all other places, she would have to leave unexpectedly - fake her own death, go missing with no explanation, it was always something that led to no pointed fingers about any of her weird behaviors while she'd been in the area, and it was always something that she would never come back from. It would also mean that she would never see Ashen again.
Could she do that?
She pushed the thought away as they came up to a shimmery, powder-blue Eclipse with a sleek rounded spoiler arcing over its back. She unlocked it with the touch of a button from her key chain. "This is my pride and joy. As fair warning, if you scratch it, I will have to kill you." She smiled teasingly at him and winked before sliding into the low car. "You can put your bag in the back." She tossed her own bag and book onto the back seat before revving the engine and turning the heat on high. A few minutes, and all the snow would melt off of her. Not as fast as normal humans, but hopefully Ashen wasn't that observant. "Excuse moi, mais you said that your house was close to the middle of town?"

He was sure his blushing face was making a fool of him, he wasnt really used to having girls around him, let alone a real beauty like Serenity. He wondered for a moment if she was just playing a cruel joke on him, but he pushed that thought to the back of his mind as he closed his locker. He turned and walked with her, trying to stop his cheeks going redder as she slipped her arm through his. He sighed silently, this would have never happened in LA, the girls just took pity on him, he didnt want pity because of his brother. He just wanted to be liked for being himself. He smiled and chuckled a little at her comment 'Yeah I guess your right... You must make some friends though...' He thought about it, if he had to move a lot he wouldnt want to get attached to anyone, it would be harder to move on. 'I plan to stay here for a while... There is nothing for me back from where I came from.' He sighed out loud this time, it was a lie, he had his dad, his sister. But his brother haunted him there and that was one ghost he wanted to get away from.
As they once again entered into the cold winter snow Ashen drew his clothing tighter around him. He had bought clothes especially for moving here but still they didnt seem to keep the chill away. He shivered slightly but continued walking, he was looking forward to sitting infront of the fire in his little 'home', if he could call it home. He had brought very few belongings with him from LA, he tried leaving everything that would remind him of his past behind... It didnt really leave much else for him to take. A few select clothes and some old school notes, but nothing grand. He looked over to Serenity, she seemed to be taking the cold in her stride, he guessed she was used to it though, having lived in Canada. Perhaps moving from LA to Forks had been a bit extreme... But its just what he needed, at least he hoped so. He noticed she seemed to have something on her mind, he didnt want to be nosey, but he was a little concerned 'You okay?' He frowned a little, perhaps it was something to do with him, perhaps there was something wrong...
As they came to stop by the car Ashen let off a low whistle from his cold lips... That was one hell of a car and it certainly stuck out from the rest of the cars in the lot, that is apart from the Cullen cars... He looked over to the Silver Volvo, it was there today, Ashen had gotten used to it being missing from the lot. It looked like the Cullens had a bit of competition car wise... 'Oh... I dont want you to become a murderer on my part...' He smiled and opened the door gently. His dad used to drive in cars like this, he was used to 'being careful' with expensive things. He put his bags in the back and buckled up, taking in the car. He wasnt expecting to see anything like this in Forks, after all most the people here seemed to live in poverty... At least it seemed so, but then again it was a good thing for him, a new life comepletely. 'Oh yeah, not too far from the Cafe actually, though its a tiny place...' That was putting it lightly... It was practically a studio flat, without any luxuries. However it suited his needs. He suddenly wondered whether showing this girl, who was too good to be true... The mess that was his home and life.

A dangerous smile played at the corners of Serenity's lips. The second she saw that Ashen was buckled in, she floored the gas, swung the car around, and gunned it out of the parking lot. Driving was one thing that had always cleared her head. She had been driving since the very first automobiles had come off the assembly line, and knew how to move a car very well. She'd also learned all of the police's little tricks, how to tune into their energy fields, and how to avoid them. Luckily, Forks didn't seem too tight on security - she hadn't run into an officer yet. She looked as Ashen slyly, that same dangerous expression now reaching her eyes. "I am alright, oui, though I should warn you - I am already a murderer." She laughed at the irony of her own joke.
"But you plan to stay here - that is good. Relocating often is not a lifestyle that I prefer. However, I will probably be leaving soon. Not immediately - perhaps a year, maybe less, I do not know. Forks is very..." Very easy to attract attention. Not big enough for her not to be found out. "...small. I cannot live in small places comfortably. It is too easy to be discovered." Her hands gripped the wheel tightly. What had she just said!? More importantly, why? It was one of the only times she had ever slipped up, and the only time she'd said something like that when the person she was talking to wasn't already suspicious. Each time she'd gotten out of it - though narrowly. The Volturi had to have gotten wind of her name already. For a perfect as her vampiric traits supposedly made her, she still retained her awful memory and inability to control her tongue when around those she trusted.
She trusted Ashen.
Now, she fully realized it. She trusted him. She was letting him in. She absolutely could not afford to let that happen, and she had to stop it, now. It was terrible and unpleasant and she absolutely didn't want to do it, but if she continued to get closer to him... Ashen would be in danger. And no matter what happened, she would not allow that to happen.
"Le cafe? Oui, I know where that is. That is one of very few places here I have visited." She passed the cafe, and soon after Maple Ave - where her own home was. "Tell me where to turn." She said, reaching behind her and feeling for Ashen's bookbag. Without even having to touch it, his cell phone sped into her hand. Not tall enough to steer with her knees while sitting, she scrunched down in her seat so that her knees rested on the wheel. While she drove, using psychic vibrations to see the road ahead of her without really looking, she flipped open his phone and punched her number into it. "Hey, Ashen, have you heard of that new yoga place? Zen Studios?" She asked out of curiosity, handing him back his phone. "We just passed it a bit ago - And you have my number now, should you ever need me." Serenity slid back into a normal seated position and retook the wheel with her hands. Hopefully, Ashen would never have to use that number. Starting from the moment he left the car, she had to start pulling away from him. If he ever did call, it would be because he was in trouble.
